The Blue Kite (1993)
Directed by Tian Zhuangzhuang
The Blue Kite focuses on a young boy, Teitou, as he grows up in 50s and 60s in China, and the dangers and hardships he and his mother must face. It is split into three acts, each one featuring Tietou at a different age and with a different father figure in his home, starting with the boy's real father. Just as each father starts to endear himself to the audience, something unexpected happens that takes him away. There’s a strong fatalistic streak in the film that likely reflects the feelings of people living in that time period. It’s painful watching Teitou and his mother in a way toyed with by forces out of their control. See this film if you can, it gives a rare glimpse into a past some would like to keep secret.
